Hosted by the Botswana Open Science and Open Data Forum, the IDW 2018 brought together data experts, policy makers, industry representatives and researchers from all disciplines and from all over the world. Organized jointly by CODATA, the World Data System (WDS) and the Research Data Alliance (RDA), the event was themed "The Digital Frontiers of Global Science". A particular focus in Gaborone was on Open Data and its benefits to society, especially in Africa, as Mokgweetse Masisi, President of Botswana, emphasized during the official opening of the event.

Following the International Data Week, the WDS Repositories Day took place on November 9, 2018, which was also the WDS Membership Forum.

At both events, Martina Stockhause, representing the World Data Center for Climate (WDCC) and the IPCC Data Distribution Center (DDC), presented current topics at the DKRZ - including a presentation on "Support for IPCC Data Distribution Centers" co-jointly with her US colleague Robert S. Chen. Afterwards, representatives of the IPCC DDC and the WDS discussed how the intended closer cooperation between IPCC and WDS can be organized.
