The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central data processing facility for the German climate and Earth system modeling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ operates supercomputers of the highest performance class, modern high-performance clusters and graphics systems as well as one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide.

Our applications department is looking for a

Software Engineer (m/f/d)

To improve the infrastructure for climate modelling, DKRZ participates in many national and international projects. As part of the national climate modelling initiative PalMod ( with the aim of a better understanding of climate dynamics during the last glacial cycle, the DKRZ works in the field of software development and model optimization. For this we are looking for further team members.

Your duties:

Together with the colleagues in the PalMod project you work on optimizing the used climate models. The focus here is on the efficient use of complex coupled Earth System Models, with which a transient simulation of more than 100,000 years is planned. Key factors in achieving this goal are:

  • Supporting scientists in creating efficient model simulations
  • Merging the development work from phase 1 of the project
  • Continuous analysis of performance metrics and detection/removal of barriers to achieve the target throughput rate
  • Cooperation in the further development of ESM-Tools (

Your profile:

  • A university degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics/Engineering or related fields
  • Expert programming knowledge (preferably in Python and FORTRAN)
  • Knowledge in Software Engineering
  • High experience in use of UNIX systems

In addition to the professional aptitude, we expect initiative and willingness to learn. You can expect an exciting project in the field of climate research, interdisciplinary cooperation with other research institutions in Germany, and a challenging task at the interface between HPC and applied science.

This position is advertised subject to the final approval of the funding agency; it is limited to 3 years, with the possibility of extension in the third phase of the PalMod project. The salary will be according to your personal qualification based on the German regulations for the Civil Service (TVöD). Further enquiries can be addressed to Dr. Hendryk Bockelmann ([Email protection active, please enable JavaScript.]).
