The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central data processing facility for the German climate and Earth system modeling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ operates supercomputers of the highest performance class, modern high-performance clusters and graphics systems as well as one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide.

As part of a Horizon 2020 project funded until 2022, the Department of Data Management is hiring a:

Data Manager (w/m/d) in the field of internationally networked data services for climate research

Project description and tasks:

The IS-ENES3 project will establish, integrate and sustainably provide data services to the climate research community at European level. In addition to services that have already been used for many years for data search and data access, climate researchers are now to be supported in the data evaluation at the data centers. For this purpose, the large European climate data centers in Germany, England, France, Italy and the Netherlands provide computing resources. Based on this clearly defined and coordinated data analytics services will be developed, aligned, and scientists will be supported in their application.

Your task will be to support the establishment of these services at the DKRZ and in to assist in the establishment of new processing services. On the other hand, you are contributing to the user support and  the service usage reporting. In both task areas, you work closely with colleagues at the DKRZ and the other European data centers to jointly support European climate scientists.

Your profile:

• Completed studies in computer science, physics or geosciences
• Experience in distributed data infrastructures or geo-data services
• Interest to combine practical IT work with organizational tasks
• Practical IT skills in the area of ​​programming or scripting languages ​​as well as in the area of ​​providing web services
• Knowledge in the field of climate data analysis as well as modern software methodologies (collaboration in open source projects, modular software deployment based on, for example, Docker) or the willingness to familiarize themselves intensively with these areas
• Discrete thinking and ongoing willingness to learn
• High motivation, service orientation and reliability
• Good language skills in German and English and enjoy working in teams, especially with international partners
