The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central data processing facility for the German climate and Earth system modeling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ operates supercomputers of the highest performance class, modern high-performance clusters and graphics systems as well as one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide.

For the ESiWACE2 we are hiring a

Senior Researcher and scientific programme manager (m/f/d)

to support the project until its closure (31 December 2022) in the ESiWACE2 WP1, WP3, WP5 and WP7.

The position is within the project ESiWACE2 Centre of Excellence in Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe funded by the Horizon 2020 programme. The project ESiWACE2 has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme grant agreement No 823988.

Responsibilities

In these work packages the researcher will work on the following tasks:

  • Within WP1: Coordination of set-up of very high-resolution simulation with the coupled ICON model and execution of model runs.
  • Within WP3: Set up and support of a lightweight infrastructure for comparison studies of high-resolution climate simulations.
  • Within WP5: Extension of the visualization capabilities for climate models, in particular ICON. Extension of the existing in-situ visualization / progressive rendering approach and development of workflows. Creating and presentation of exemplary visualizations and demonstrators for all climate models within ESiWACE2, in particular for ICON.
  • In particular, for WP7, the scientific programme manager is in charge of the day-to-day management of the project, ensures that ESiWACE2 is implemented coherently with the project agenda, keeps close contact with all consortium partners, overlooks the overall progress towards the ESiWACE2 goals in terms of deliverable and milestone control, is in charge of risk and quality management, and supports the planning and coordination of corporate activities. In this role, the scientific programme manager will work in close cooperation with the ESiWACE2 Coordinator, the Co-coordinator, and with the project officer.
  • Additionally, it is expected that the candidate will provide general support to communication and dissemination tasks and in the exploitation of the project results.

Qualifications

  • Strong background in earth-sciences, physics, mathematics or computer science
  • Experience in climate simulation and/or in management and coordination of research activities in the field of high-performance-computing applications
  • Software development experience for high-performance-computing and coupled applications
  • Interdisciplinary communication skills

Experience

  • Experience in running climate models (all WP1)
  • Experience in analysis and visualization of large scientific data sets; Knowledge of  ParaView and Vapor are an advantage (WP3 and WP5).
  • Very good programming skills, preferably with focus on C++ and FORTRAN (WP1, WP3, WP5)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to transfer complex concepts to different audiences and to liaise with different communities and stakeholders (WP7)
  • Fluency in English and German
