The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central data processing facility for the German climate and Earth system modeling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ operates supercomputers of the highest performance class, modern high-performance clusters and graphics systems as well as one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide.

We are looking for an

HPC Application Optimisation Engineer (all genders)

To improve the infrastructure for climate modelling, DKRZ participates in many national and international projects. Through its research group on Scientific Computing, DKRZ is linked to the Department of Informatics at the University of Hamburg.

In 2020, the current High-Performance Computing (HPC) system ‘Mistral’ will be replaced by a new system. This involves building of a new HPC user environment, preparing the transition from the old to the new system, evaluate users’ needs before the system is handed over, and finally support the users while actually relocating their applications.

Your job  will include an active contribution to designing the user experience for the next HPC system. In close cooperation with the system administrators, you will implement and support tools related to performance monitoring of user applications. Furthermore, front-line support for the High Performance Computing user community, which includes scientists, researchers, and students at many levels of education and experience, will complete this position.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop and run a performance monitoring environment for batch jobs
  • HPC job scheduling support and development using Slurm
  • Proactive approach to customer service regarding the optimisation of user code on the new HPC system
  • User support and training for HPC tools (e.g. debugger and profiler)
  • Develop and run continuous diagnostic tests of the HPC system to isolate issues and identify potential for optimisation and enhancements
  • Collaborate and consult with the system administrators, scientists, and researchers to resolve technical issues

Your Profile

  • Familiarity in HPC environments;  parallelisation, compiling, and analysing applications on Linux clusters
  • Ideally knowledge in monitoring, profiling and tracing tools for HPC systems and applications

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Computer or Computational Science or equivalent related education/experience
  • Strong familiarity with the Linux command line, HPC related programming languages (C/C++, FORTRAN, Python), and parallelisation approaches (especially MPI)
  • Excellent communication skills; able to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organization

The position will start in July 2020 the earliest. The contract is initially limited for 2 years. Payment will be in accordance with the German public service positions (TVöD according to the applicants qualifications), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment follow those of the German civil service.
