The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central data processing facility for the German climate and Earth system modeling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ operates supercomputers of the highest performance class, modern high-performance clusters and graphics systems as well as one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide.

For RegIKlim we are hiring a

Computational Research Scientist (all genders)

The position (100%) is funded through the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) project "Useful local climate information for Germany (NUKLEUS) - Analysis Infrastructure (ANAIS) for Regional Climate Modeling".

The central goal of NUKLEUS is the generation of spatially and temporally highly resolved climate information including reliable statements about future regional climate developments. This goal is to be achieved with the help of a regional multi-model ensemble. Therefore, a uniform analysis infrastructure on a high performance computer is needed. The proven FREVA ( system will be set up, which provides a common software interface for the cross-project development of evaluation routines. Users of the common software pool receive a software package tailored to the NUKLEUS' FREVA instance, which gives the possibility to keep track around model datasets and follow research results in a transparent way. It will also exploit synergies with related activities like the existing BMBF funded CMIP6-DICAD ( and ClimXtreme ( projects applying Freva instances.

Job description

  • Coordination of the ANAIS project, cooperation and scientific interaction with RegIKlim and NUKLEUS partners for overall strategies.
  • Freva installation and provision for project partners; coordination of software and data management on evaluation procedures in NUKLEUS.
  • Administration, bug-fixing, adjustments due to HPC architectures. Update of Freva Software, plugin management, climate data workflow management.
  • Support of NUKLEUS on software related issues around Freva system, setup and maintenance of the software infrastructure at the DKRZ (e.g. GitLab). Training (incl. travel) for users and plugin developers

  • University degree (MSc) in Computer Sciences and/or Natural Sciences, or similar fields. A PhD in these fields is a plus.

(Professional) Experience

  • Experience in the field of (regional) climate model data and its data standards, evaluation of climate models, scientific programming.
  • Knowledge in the field of software development and implementation of web technologies.

  • Computer coding experience in Python 2 and 3 including web services (e.g. Django, React, or similar).
  • Knowledge in data base systems (e.g. MySQL, SOLR), content management systems, High Performance Computers (Unix/Linux) and Bash.

This is an exciting opportunity in a flexible academic environment where you have the chance to develop initiative and shape services of the next generation in an area of high social relevance.
