| This is DKRZ's facility for the high end visualization of climate model data, for animation recording and for the production of videos. |
The DKRZ Visualization Server can be used remotely - over the internet - as well as locally at DKRZ in selected rooms. In the DKRZ video lab, the video signal of the system can be displayed in high resolution (up to 1920x1200 pixels). Also, it is possible to make live video recordings of the visualization sessions. But, although the graphics signal can be displayed in HDTV resolution - until now, we are only able to produce videos in PAL resolution (720x576 pixels).
Another system feasible for interactive data visualization is the SGI 'PRISM' with 4 Itanium-2 (IA-64) CPUs (1.4 GHz, 3 MB L3 Cache), 8 GB Memory, 2 ATI Fire GL X2 Graphic Pipes. 2.1 TBytes disk space. With the powerful graphics hardware this linux workstation is specially designed for 3 D intensive applications like AVS/Express or Vis5D.
Avid Media Composer 9000 XL is our new PC based nonlinear video editing system which supports two uncompressed digital video streams in real time. This system is supplemented by a traditional analogue video editing facility for component video (BetacamSP).
Both systems allow for professional video quality. All video players, recorders, switchers, etc. are interconnected with VLAN. This network allows the frame accurate synchronization and remote control of all video hardware components using a central video editor. For those interested in more technical details we have a listing of our equipment.
There are two different recording modes: single frame recording to guarantee smooth animations and real time recording for real time applications like "live demos" of software. Today single frame recording is done through file transfers of imagery to the Avid system.
This source material can be assembled using soft wipes, dissolves or special effects. Titles or additional graphics can be keyed over the scenes. Of course the computer generated imagery can be combined with pictures from the "real world". Music, sound, and narration complete the production. The final result can be copied to several video formats:
