Concept of WDCC's Data Publication Process

WDCC's concept of Data Publication with assignment of unique identifiers DOI and URN according to DataCite regulations.

Motivation

Using the Data of the World Data Center Climate (WDCC) enables scientists comfortably to discover, find and access scientific data via a web-based platform. WDCC's Data Publication Service extends these services by the following benefits

  • ensuring a high data quality and long-term usability
  • ensuring a permanent and persistent access of data and metadata via the persistent identifiers (DOI/URN)
  • enabling easy and clear data citations in scientific publications using the persistent identifiers (DOI/URN) for the credit of the data creators

Publication Process at WDCC

WDCC publishes its data at DataCite, an international consortium for the publication of scientific data, which is a member of the IDF(International DOI Foundation). The DataCite member German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) is WDCC's national contract partner for DOI/URN data registrations. Registered data is inserted into the international DOI handle system with the official DOI resolver at http://dx.doi.org. The DataCite data publication process was developed on the base of the national German STD-DOI data publication regulation: http://www.std-doi.de.

Published Data are granted by WDCC as publication agency:

- long term availability of primary data in our online repository (http://cera-www.dkrz.de)
- long term availability of metadata in our online repository (http://cera-www.dkrz.de)
- open access to primary data and metadata (authentification for data access required)
- published data entities are fixed and remain unchanged
- DataCite DOI metadata (doi:10.5438/0005), i.e. data identifiers (data citations), data formats and data sizes are fixed

The procedure of publishing data is divided into four basic steps:

1. Designate data and prepare for publication, e.g. set permissions for data creator

2. Execution and documentation of a Scientific Quality Assurance (SQA) on data and metadata by the data creator using atarrabi
3. Execution and documentation of a Technical Quality Assurance (TQA) as cross- and double-checks of metadata and data access controls by WDCC's publication agent
4. Preparation and registration of the data and metadata at the DataCite API with DOI and URN assignment; data is inserted into the DOI handling system within 24 hours

For more information on quality control see:

As the published data entity should be suitable for citing in scientific literature using its assigned DOI, WDCC generally publishes data collections of a scientific experiment or dataset groups (subsets of the  overall experiment data). The DOI resolves to a landing page hosted by WDCC, which summarizes basic data information and functions as an entry point to dataset access and additional metadata access.
