Data Management

As a "laboratory for the German climate research", DKRZ not only provides computing power and data archiving, it also offers services for effective scientific data management.

The services for data archiving are integrated into the infrastructure of the World Data Center Climate (WDCC). These basic services are:

  • Documentation of research data in the data catalog of the WDCC
  • Long term archiving of climate data with a transparent, web-based access

These services for data documentation, data archiving, data mining and web-based data access are also available to external users with climate-related data sources at cost price.

A special service for the direct integration of research data in scientific publications, a standard for publication of research data as independent data entities analogous to publications in journals, has been developed together with the Technical Information Library (TIB) in Hannover. An editorial process at DKRZ will ensure the quality of metadata and research data in collaboration with the corresponding data producers. A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and a citation code will be provided and afterwards registered with the DOI registration agency in the TIB's  library catalog. On this basis, the research data can be searched and found as independent data entities in the TIB catalog together with the literature. They have a clear citation prescribed for direct use in scientific work and can be accessed via the DOI permanently and independently from its current location.

The primary aim of our data management is to support the entire life cycle of climate data at DKRZ.

Another service is offered for the generation of climate model data. For efficient simulations with climate models, DKRZ offers, in addition to the optimization of model code, the runtime environment IMDI (Integrating Model and Data Infrastructure). IMDI optimizes the workflow of climate model calculations for DKRZ's computer and data infrastructure and thus enables the  effective use of the available resources. At DKRZ, IMDI is used for consortia simulations.
